In this tutorial, we will explore how to use the Perspective Tool in GIMP 2.10. This powerful feature allows you to manipulate images to fit a specific perspective, making it ideal for creating realistic overlays and enhancing your graphic design projects.
To begin, ensure you have GIMP 2.10 installed on your computer. We will use an image downloaded from Pixabay, which you can find linked in the YouTube description of this tutorial.
Creating a New Image
- Open GIMP and navigate to File > New.
- Set the image dimensions to 1920 by 1080 pixels.
- Click on Advanced Options and set the resolution to 72 dpi.
- Choose Transparency for the fill option and click OK.
You will now have a blank canvas ready for your image.
- Locate the downloaded image on your desktop.
- Drag and drop the image onto the GIMP canvas.
- If the image appears too large, hold down the Ctrl key and use your mouse wheel to zoom out.
Scaling the Image
To scale the image, press Shift + S or select the Scale Tool from the toolbox.
Click on the image and set the opacity to 50%. This allows you to see the checkered background, helping you resize accurately.
Resize the image so that it fits nicely within the edges of the canvas, leaving a small gap around the edges.
Once satisfied, click Scale and reset the opacity back to 100%.
Use the Move Tool to adjust the position of the image. Hold down the Shift key while dragging to move it slightly.
Aim to center the image on the canvas for a balanced look.
Saving Your Work
- Press Shift + S to save your progress.
- Navigate to your desktop folder and name the file perspective-201 before clicking Save.
To replace the image on the monitor screen, we will capture a screenshot of a website:
- Open your web browser and navigate to the desired website.
- Use the Windows Snipping Tool or press Print Screen to capture the screen.
- Save the screenshot as a PNG file in the same folder.
- Drag and drop the screenshot into GIMP, ensuring it is on the top layer.
Resizing the Screen Capture
Select the Scale Tool again and click on the screen capture image.
Resize it so that it is slightly larger than the monitor screen for a realistic overlay.
With the screen capture selected, switch to the Perspective Tool.
Zoom in using Ctrl and the mouse wheel, and pan around using the middle mouse button.
Click on the corners of the screen capture to adjust its perspective, aligning it with the monitor screen.
Take your time to ensure the alignment looks natural and realistic.
Finalising the Image
Once you are satisfied with the alignment, click Transform to apply the changes.
Deselect everything by clicking on the transparent background.
Review the final image to ensure it meets your expectations.
To save your final image, go to File > Export As.
Choose the JPEG format and name it perspective-01.jpg.
Click Save and leave the compression at 9%.
