Paint Effect in Gimp 2.10 using G’mic Plugin

Want to turn an ordinary photo into a piece of painterly art? In this tutorial, we’ll walk through exactly how to create a super cool, swirling paint effect in GIMP using the free G’MIC plugin – the same technique made famous by artists known for their expressive, swirl-brushed style. No prior digital art experience needed; you just need GIMP, the G’MIC plugin, and a bright, high-contrast image to work with.

What You'll Need

  • GIMP 2.10 (free and open-source image editor)
  • The G’MIC plugin installed (a separate one-time install if you don’t already have it)
  • A bright, high-contrast source image – this effect looks best on images with vivid colours and strong light, rather than dark or muted photos

Step 1: Import Your Image

Open GIMP and drag your chosen image into the workspace. When prompted, click Convert to bring the image into the correct format for editing. Bright, colourful photos with clear focal points (buildings, cars, street scenes, etc.) tend to produce the most striking results with this technique.

Step 2: Open the G'MIC Plugin

With your image loaded, go to:

Filters → G’MIC-Qt

This launches the G’MIC interface inside GIMP. From the menu on the left, navigate to:

Artistic → Paint Dab

This is the filter responsible for creating the swirling, brushstroke-like paint texture.

Step 3: Dial In Your Settings

The Paint Dab filter has several adjustable parameters that dramatically change the final look. A good starting point:

  • Iterations: 2
  • Amplitude: 3
  • Sharpness: 0.2
  • Sigma: 1
  • DI (detail): 4
  • Equalize: optional, toggle on/off to compare results

These settings aren’t one-size-fits-all — the real magic happens when you experiment. Different combinations produce dramatically different textures, so don’t be afraid to nudge each value and preview the change.

Pro tip: Hold Ctrl and click-drag with your mouse to preview the effect on different parts of the image. G’MIC only renders the preview on the section you’re viewing (full-image previews would be too slow to process), so use this to scout out the most interesting areas before committing.

Step 4: Apply the Effect

Once you’re happy with your settings, choose whether to output the result to a new layer or the same layer. Since you’ll likely still have your original image saved separately, applying to the same layer is usually fine.

Click Apply, then be patient – this filter is processing-intensive and can take 1.5 to 2 minutes depending on your image size and settings, so grab a coffee while it renders.

Step 5: Zoom In and Explore

Once processing finishes, click OK to return to your canvas. The effect might look a little strange zoomed out, but zoom in and you’ll start to see the beautiful swirling paint texture emerge – similar to the iconic brushwork style associated with famous impressionist painters. Cropping into specific sections of the image often reveals the most visually interesting detail, since you can pick out shapes like cars, buildings, or figures rendered in expressive brushstrokes.

Step 6: Export Your Artwork

Go to File → Export As, name your file (e.g., artwork-01), and save it as a JPEG at around 90% quality.

Bonus: Experiment with Colour and Composition

Once you have your base painted version exported, you can take the creativity even further:

  1. Change the colour palette: Open your exported file and go to Colours → Hue-Saturation. Adjust the hue to shift the palette toward purples, greens, or any combination you like, and boost saturation for a punchier, more vibrant look.
  2. Crop and recompose: Use the rectangle select tool to isolate an especially interesting section of the image, then go to Layer → Crop to Selection.
  3. Scale to fill the canvas: Use the Scale tool to stretch your cropped selection back out to fill the full canvas, then reposition it with the Move tool for a fresh composition.
  4. Export your variation: Save this new version separately (e.g., artwork-02) so you can compare styles side by side.

Final Thoughts

This G’MIC Paint Dab technique is a fantastic way to transform everyday photography into gallery-worthy digital art – and because every setting is adjustable, no two results ever look quite the same. Try it on a few different bright, high-contrast images, tweak the iteration, amplitude, and sigma values, and don’t be afraid to play with color grading afterward for even more variety.

Give it a try in your own GIMP workspace, and see what unique paint-effect artwork you can create!
