Outline Image in GIMP 2.10

Want to give your photos a bold, stylized look with a clean outline effect? In this tutorial, we’ll walk through a quick and easy technique for outlining an image in GIMP – no advanced plugins required, just a few of GIMP’s built-in tools used creatively.

What You'll Need

  • GIMP 2.10 installed on your computer
  • Any image with a fairly consistent background colour (we’re using a free image from Unsplash)

Step 1: Set Up Your Canvas

Open GIMP and go to File > New. Set your canvas to 1920 x 1080, choose Portrait orientation, click Advance, and set the resolution to 72 DPI with transparency enabled. Click OK to create your new document.

Step 2: Import and Resize Your Image

Drag and drop your image into the canvas. Since the image will likely be larger than your canvas, hold Ctrl and scroll to zoom out so you can see the entire frame. Use the middle mouse button to pan around.

Press Shift + S (or click the Scale tool) to resize the image. Lower the tool’s opacity first so you can see the checkered transparency grid behind it – this makes it much easier to judge how far to scale and position the image without overshooting. Drag the image down so it covers the bottom of the canvas, then click Scale.

Step 3: Remove the Background with the Magic Wand Tool

Since the background in this example is a fairly consistent pink/purple tone, the Magic Wand (Fuzzy Select) tool is perfect for removing it.

  • Set Feathering to around 4–5 pixels – this is the key setting that controls the thickness of the outline effect you’ll end up with.
  • Set the Threshold to roughly 11–12.
  • Click on the background area to make a selection, then press Ctrl + X to delete it.
  • Repeat around the edges of the image, clicking and deleting sections of background as you go, until most of the unwanted background is removed.

Step 4: Clean Up the Edges

Some artifacts will likely remain around the edges. To spot them clearly:

  1. Click the Move tool and set Select > None.
  2. Fill the background layer with black using the colour swatch and the Paint Bucket tool – this makes leftover pixels easy to see.
  3. Use the Eraser tool (holding Ctrl to constrain movement) to carefully clean up stray pixels along the outline, being careful not to erase the outline itself.
  4. Zoom out periodically to check that the outline thickness looks consistent all the way around the image.

This cleanup step is what turns a rough cutout into a polished, professional-looking outline.

Step 5: Duplicate the Layer for Creative Effects

Once your outline looks good, click the image layer and use the Duplicate Layer button to create a couple of copies. Keep one original layer untouched, and hide the extras for now – you’ll bring them back one at a time to experiment.

Effect 1 – Silhouette with Levels: Select a duplicate layer, go to Colors > Levels, and drag the black-point slider. Moving it lets you dial in anything from a subtle contrast boost to a full black silhouette with just the outline remaining. Set the layer mode to Overlay to blend it with the layer below.

Effect 2 – Colour Tint with Hue-Saturation: On another duplicate layer, go to Colors > Hue-Saturation and shift the hue toward a colour of your choice (a pink/purple tone works nicely in this example). Set this layer’s mode to Overlay as well. You can toggle each layer on and off to compare different combinations and find the style you like best.

Step 6: Add a Gradient Background

For a final creative touch, duplicate the background layer and use the Gradient tool. Set your foreground colour to a colour like blue, and your background to black, then choose the FG to BG gradient option. Drag the gradient across the canvas (holding Ctrl to constrain the angle) to create a smooth faded backdrop behind your outlined image.

Step 7: Export Your Final Image

Once you’re happy with the result:

  1. Go to File > Save As to save your GIMP project (.xcf) so you can edit it later.
  2. Go to File > Export As, choose JPEG, and export at around 90% quality.

You’ll now have both your original image and a new, stylised outlined version saved side by side.

Final Thoughts

This is just one of many ways to outline an image in GIMP – but it’s a fast, flexible method that also opens the door to creative color and layering experiments. If you want a black or white outline, or a much stronger border, you’d take a slightly different approach, but the core idea (feathered selection + layer duplication + blend modes) remains a great starting point for stylising any photo.
