Welcome to the first part of our HTML5 and CSS3 beginners tutorial. In this post, we will guide you through the process of installing essential software that will help you start your journey in web design. The software we will cover includes a web browser and a text editor, both of which are freely available.
Step 1: Downloading Google Chrome
The first software we need is a web browser. For this tutorial, we will use Google Chrome.
Follow these steps to download and install it:
- Open your preferred web browser and go to Google.
- Type “Google Chrome” in the search bar and hit enter.
- Click on the official Google Chrome link.
- Click the download button. This will work for Windows, Mac, or Linux operating systems.
- You may be prompted to send usage statistics and crash reports to Google; this is optional. Click “Accept and Install” to proceed.
- Once the download is complete, locate the downloaded file (usually in your downloads folder) and click on it to launch the installation.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
After completing these steps, Google Chrome will be installed on your computer and will serve as the default web browser for our coding activities.
Step 2: Installing a Text Editor
Next, we need a text editor to write our HTML and CSS code. For Windows users, we recommend Notepad++.
Here’s how to install it:
- Open Google Chrome and type “Notepad++” in the search bar.
- Click on the link to the official Notepad++ website.
- Click the download button to get the installer.
- Once the download is complete, click on the installer file to begin the installation.
- You can select your preferred language; we will stick with English for this tutorial. Click “Next” to continue.
- You can choose not to run Notepad++ immediately after installation.
For Mac and Linux users, we will use a different text editor called Brackets.
Here’s how to install it:
- Open Google Chrome and type “brackets.io” in the search bar.
- Click on the official Brackets website link.
- You will see options to download Brackets for different operating systems. Select the appropriate version for your system.
- Follow the prompts to download and install Brackets.
Step 3: Setting Up Your Software
Once you have installed both Google Chrome and your chosen text editor (Notepad++ or Brackets), it’s time to set them up for use:
- Open Notepad++ (or Brackets) to see the default interface. You will have an empty page ready for coding.
- Open Google Chrome to have your browser ready for testing your code.
- You can arrange the windows side by side on your desktop for easy access. On Windows, you can adjust the height of the windows by dragging the edges.
Conclusion
Now that you have installed Google Chrome and a text editor, you are ready to start coding.
