How to remove background from an image using GIMP 2.10

In this tutorial, we will explore how to effectively remove backgrounds from images using GIMP 2.10. This step-by-step guide will help you understand the process, especially focusing on the path tool for precise cutouts.

Welcome to this DCP Graphic Design. Today, we will learn how to remove a background from an image using GIMP 2.10. We will be working with images downloaded from Unsplash and Pixabay, which I will link in the description below.

Preparing Your Images

First, let’s open the folder on our desktop where we have saved the images. We have a background image and a picture of a lady that we want to cut out and place onto a new background. The goal is to replace a blurry background with a more appealing one.

Loading the Image into GIMP

  1. Open GIMP and drag the image of the lady into the workspace. If prompted to change color settings, click “Convert”.
  2. Once the image is loaded, we will use the path tool to remove the background.

Using the Path Tool

The path tool can be tricky if you are unfamiliar with it, but it is very effective for creating accurate cutouts. Here’s how to use it:

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Select the Path Tool: Click on the path tool in the toolbox.
  2. Start Creating Points: Hold down the Control key and click on the image to create your first point. It’s best to start at a corner.
  3. Continue Adding Points: Keep left-clicking to add points along the edge of the subject. Use small dots rather than large gaps to ensure accuracy in the cutout.
  4. Creating Curves: When you reach a curve, draw an imaginary line to the next point, left-click, and drag to create the curve. This will help you shape the cutout accurately.
  5. Adjusting Points: If you need to adjust a point, simply click on it and drag it closer to the desired position. This is crucial for maintaining the shape of the subject.
  6. Zooming In and Out: Use the Control key to zoom in for detailed work and zoom out to see the overall shape you are creating.

Tips for Accuracy

  • Be Patient: This process takes time. If you feel impatient, consider speeding up the video playback.
  • Use Small Dots: The smaller the dots, the more accurate your cutout will be.
  • Undo Mistakes: If you make a mistake, press Control + Z to undo your last action.

Completing the Cutout

Continue adding points around the subject until you return to the starting point. Once you have completed the outline:

  1. Create a Selection: Click on the path and hit the Enter key to create a selection.
  2. Copy and Paste: Copy the selection (Control + C) and paste it onto a new layer (Control + V).
  3. Anchor the Layer: Click the anchor icon to finalize the pasted image.

Finaliding the Image

Now that we have our cutout, we can integrate it into a new background:

  1. Import the New Background: Create a new image with the desired dimensions (e.g., 1920×1080) and a transparent background.
  2. Drag the Cutout: Move the cutout image onto the new background.
  3. Adjust Position and Size: Use the scale tool to resize the cutout as needed. You can also flip the background if necessary to improve composition.

Using the Clone Tool for Realism

To make the cutout look more natural:

  1. Duplicate the Background Layer: Right-click on the background layer and duplicate it.
  2. Use the Clone Tool: Select the clone tool and adjust the brush settings for size and hardness.
  3. Paint Over the Edges: Sample the sand color from the background and paint over the edges of the cutout to blend it seamlessly into the new background.

Conclusion

In this tutorial, we have learned how to remove backgrounds from images using GIMP 2.10. We covered the use of the path tool for precise cutouts, techniques for integrating the cutout into a new background, and tips for achieving a professional-looking result. Remember, practice makes perfect, and with time, you will become more proficient in using GIMP for your image editing needs.

FAQs

What is the best tool for removing background from an image in GIMP?

In GIMP there are a few different ways to remove a background from an image. I prefer to use the paths tool as this is one of the most accurate tools for removing backgrounds. For more simple backgrounds you can use the fuzzy select tool. The advantage of using the paths select tool is you can re-edit the selection and save the selection in the GIMP file for future edits.

A layer mask is also another accurate method of creating a selection, once a selection is done then you can use a layer mask to isolate the selected content and remove the background. The layer mask can also be edited if required, but I still prefer to use the paths tool whenever possible.
