In this tutorial, we will explore how to create a beautiful bokeh effect using GIMP. This effect allows you to blur the background of an image while keeping the subject in sharp focus, resulting in a visually appealing photograph. We will walk through the steps needed to achieve this effect, from preparing your images to applying the necessary filters.
To begin, ensure you have GIMP installed on your computer. Open the program and prepare the images you want to work with. For this tutorial, we will use a picture of a lady and a separate background image.
Step 1: Open Your Images
- Open GIMP and drag and drop your main image (the one with the subject) into the canvas.
- Make sure you have the Layers dialog open. If not, go to
Windows>Dockable Dialogs>Layers.
Step 2: Prepare the Subject Image
- Right-click on the image layer in the Layers dialog and select
Add Alpha Channel. This allows for transparency in the image. - Right-click again on the same image layer and choose

Step 3: Create the Mask
- Switch the colors so that black is on top (for the subject) and white is at the bottom (for the background).
- Select the Paintbrush tool and set the brush size to a larger diameter. Paint over the subject to keep it visible while the background will be masked out.
- To zoom in and out, hold down the Control key on your keyboard. Use the middle mouse button to navigate around the image.

File>Save Asand naming your image. - Next, go to
Colors>Invertto switch the mask colors, making the subject white and the background black. - Use
Edit>Select All, thenEdit>Cutto remove the background.

Step 6: Position the Subject
- Use the Move tool to position the subject in the center of the background.
- If necessary, use the Resize tool to adjust the size of the subject image.
Step 7: Apply the Bokeh Effect
- Click on the background layer in the Layers dialog.
- Go to
Filters>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Adjust the blur radius to achieve the desired bokeh effect. Experiment with different settings to see what looks best. - Click
OKto apply the blur.
Step 8: Final Touches
- If there are any rough edges around the subject, use the Eraser tool to clean them up.
- Spend some time refining the edges to ensure a smooth transition between the subject and the background.
