Green Screen Tutorial – Magix Movie Edit Pro 2020

Ever wanted to make it look like you’re standing in front of a totally different background – a swirling smoke effect, a branded backdrop, or footage playing behind you while you talk to camera? That’s exactly what the green screen (chroma key) function in MAGIX Movie Edit Pro lets you do, and it’s easier than you might think. In this DCP Work tutorial, we walk through the entire process using two simple video clips.

What You'll Need

Before you get started, gather your assets:

  • background video clip (the footage that will show through the green screen)
  • green screen video clip (footage filmed in front of a green – or blue – background)
  • Optionally, an audio clip to layer in
In this tutorial, both video clips were sourced from Pixabay – a free stock footage library – making this technique accessible even if you don’t have your own green screen footage yet.

Step 1: Set Up Your Timeline Layers

Open MAGIX Movie Edit Pro and drag your background clip (in this example, a dancer) onto the first/bottom track. Click Adjust to automatically match the frame rate to your other footage.

Here’s the key concept to understand: in Movie Edit Pro, layers work in reverse compared to what you might expect. The bottom track is your base layer, and each track above it sits on top visually. So:

  • Track 1 (bottom) = background footage
  • Track 2 = green screen footage (sits on top)
  • Track 3 = anything layered above that, and so on

Step 2: Add the Green Screen Clip

Drag your green screen clip onto the track above your background clip. At this point, the green screen footage will completely cover the background clip underneath – that’s expected, since we haven’t removed the green yet.

This is exactly the setup you’d use if you filmed yourself talking in front of a green screen for a YouTube intro, tutorial, or any on-camera segment.

Step 3: Apply the Chroma Key Effect

Now for the main event:

  1. Click on the green screen clip on your timeline.
  2. Open the Effects tab.
  3. At the top of the Effects panel, select Chroma Key.
You’ll see a color swatch showing green – this tells the software which color to remove. If your footage was shot on a blue screen instead, simply select blue. MAGIX also offers additional presets like black, white, and other color options for different backdrop types.

Fine-Tuning the Key with the Color Picker

If your green isn’t a perfectly flat, even color (common with uneven lighting or wrinkled backdrops), use the built-in color picker tool. Click the picker, then click directly on the green area in your footage to sample the exact shade. First, click Reset to clear any existing settings, then select the correct color (green, in this case) to remove the background cleanly.

Once applied, scrub through your timeline – the green background disappears entirely, revealing your background footage underneath.

Step 4: Reposition Elements with Size and Position

Sometimes your overlay content needs to line up with specific action in the background clip. In this example, a smoke effect needed to move closer to where a dancer’s hand would land.

To adjust this:

  1. Go to the Effects panel and select Size and Position.
  2. Click and drag the clip to reposition it exactly where you need it – in this case, near the point of contact with the hand.

This lets you precisely composite two elements so they interact convincingly on screen.

Step 5: Adjust Speed and Timing

To sync the action better, you can speed up a clip:

  1. Click on Speed in the effects options.
  2. Increase the speed value so the transition or effect (like smoke dissipating) happens faster and lines up naturally with the background footage.

Step 6: Add Fades for a Smooth Finish

To finish the effect cleanly:

  • Add a fade-out to the green screen/overlay clip so it blends away smoothly rather than cutting abruptly.
  • Add a fade-out to the background video clip near the end as well, for a polished conclusion.

Hit play, and you’ll see the full effect in action: the green is completely gone, replaced seamlessly by your background footage.

Real-World Uses for Chroma Key

While this tutorial uses a stylised smoke-and-dancer example, the real power of chroma key is in practical content creation. You could:

  • Film yourself on a green screen delivering a talk-to-camera intro, then place video footage or a still image behind you (like a branded background or B-roll).
  • Layer your logo into the background while you present in the foreground.
  • Cut yourself out entirely and composite over any scene you like – without ever leaving your home studio.

The background doesn’t have to be video – a still image works just as well, depending on the effect you’re going for.

A Note on Terminology

You’ll often hear this effect called two different names: chroma key and green screen. They refer to the same technique – filming in front of a solid color (usually green or blue) so that color can be digitally removed and replaced. Most editing software, including MAGIX Movie Edit Pro, labels this feature “Chroma Key” in the effects menu, so that’s the term to look for.

Final Thoughts

The chroma key function in MAGIX Movie Edit Pro is a straightforward but powerful tool once you understand the layer order and know where to find the effect settings. Whether you’re building cinematic composites or simply want to swap your background for a YouTube video, this workflow – set up your layers, apply chroma key, fine-tune with size/position and speed, then fade out – will get you a clean, professional result every time.
