GIMP 2.8 Transparent Background

This tutorial guides you through the process of removing a white background from an image using GIMP.

In this tutorial, we will explore how to use GIMP 2.8, an image manipulation program, to remove a white background from an image. This process is essential for anyone looking to edit images for various purposes, such as graphic design, marketing, or personal projects. We will follow a different technique than previously demonstrated, focusing specifically on images with a white background.

To begin, ensure you have GIMP 2.8 installed on your computer. If you haven’t installed it yet, you can easily download it by searching for “image editor” on Google. Once installed, open the software and set up your workspace:

  1. Go to Windows and ensure Toolbox is selected.
  2. In Dockable Dialogs, make sure Tool Options and Layers are also selected.

You should now see the toolbox, tool options, and layers on your screen.

Next, we will import the images we want to work with:

  1. Drag and drop the background image into the canvas.
  2. Drag and drop the image of the subject (in this case, a lady) into the canvas as well.

To allow for transparency in our image, we need to add an alpha channel to the subject’s image:

  1. Right-click on the subject’s image layer.
  2. Select Add Alpha Channel.

This step is crucial as it enables us to remove the white background effectively.

Before we proceed, we need to resize the subject’s image to fit our background:

  1. Select the Scale Tool from the toolbox.
  2. Click on the subject’s image and hold down the Control key while dragging to resize it. Adjust the size until it fits well within the canvas.

To work on the subject’s image without losing the original, we will duplicate the layer:

  1. Click on the subject’s layer in the layers panel.
  2. Right-click and select Duplicate Layer.
  3. Ensure the top layer is selected for further editing.

Next, we will convert the duplicated layer to grayscale:

  1. Go to Colors in the menu.
  2. Select Desaturate and choose Luminosity.

This will change the image to grayscale, which is essential for the next steps.

To prepare the image for background removal, we will adjust the levels:

  1. Go to Colors and select Curves.
  2. Drag the pointer in the curve to the middle to fill the image with black while retaining details in the hair and edges.
  3. Click OK to apply the changes.

Now, we need to invert the colors to prepare for the removal of the background:

  1. Go back to Colors and select Invert.

This step ensures that the white areas (which we want to keep) are now visible, while the black areas (which we want to remove) are hidden.

Next, we will use the paintbrush tool to refine our selection:

  1. Select the Paint Brush Tool from the toolbox.
  2. Resize the brush to around 900 pixels.
  3. Ensure the brush color is set to white (to keep the subject).
  4. Carefully paint over the areas of the subject you want to keep, ensuring all details are included.

For finer details, reduce the brush size to around 80 pixels and zoom in to clean up any edges.

Once you are satisfied with the painted areas:

  1. Click on the subject’s layer in the layers panel.
  2. Go to Edit and select Cut.
  3. Right-click on the layer and select Add Layer Mask. Choose White (full opacity) and click Add.
  4. Press Control + V to paste the cut image back onto the layer mask.

To finalize the changes:

  1. Click on the anchor icon in the layers panel to anchor the layer mask.

Now that the background is removed, we need to position the subject on the new background:

  1. Select the subject’s layer and use the Move Tool to reposition it as desired.
  2. Resize if necessary by holding down the Control key while using the scale tool.

Before exporting your final image, it’s essential to save your work:

  1. Click on File and select Save As to save your project file. This allows you to return to the original image for future edits.
  2. To export the final image, go to File and select Export. Name your file (e.g., “image_edited”) and choose JPEG as the file type.
  3. Click Export to save the edited image.

In this tutorial, we successfully removed a white background from an image using GIMP 2.8 and placed the subject onto a new background.

This technique is particularly useful for images with simple backgrounds.

We hope you found this graphic design tutorial helpful and look forward to seeing you in the next one!
