How to Batch Process Images in GIMP 2.10 using BIMP 2 Plugin

This blog post provides a comprehensive guide on how to batch process images in GIMP 2.10 using the BIMP 2 plugin.

Batch processing images can significantly speed up your workflow, especially for photographers and designers. In this guide, we will explore how to use the BIMP (Batch Image Manipulation Plugin) for GIMP 2.10, a powerful and free tool that allows you to manipulate multiple images at once.

To get started, you need to install the BIMP plugin. Follow these steps:

  1. Open your web browser and search for “BIMP for GIMP.”
  2. Click on the official BIMP website link.
  3. Choose the appropriate installer for your operating system (Windows or macOS). Note that there is no Linux version available.
  4. Download the installer and move it to a designated folder on your desktop.
  5. After downloading, ensure your antivirus software scans the file for safety.
  6. Launch the installer and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Once installed, you can access BIMP from the GIMP software under the File menu by selecting “Batch Image Manipulation.”

Now that you have BIMP installed, let’s test it out with some images. Here’s how:

  1. Prepare Your Images: Create a folder on your desktop and place the images you want to manipulate inside it. For this example, we will use four images downloaded from Unsplash.
  2. Open GIMP and navigate to File > Batch Image Manipulation.
  3. In the BIMP window, click on “Add Images” and select the folder containing your images. You can add individual images or an entire folder.
  4. Set Output Folder: Click on the output option and create a new folder where the manipulated images will be saved. For instance, name it “Watermark.”

To add a watermark to your images, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the “Add” button in the BIMP window.
  2. Select “Add Watermark” from the list of actions.
  3. Choose whether to add a text or image watermark. For simplicity, we will add a text watermark.
  4. Enter your desired text (e.g., “DCP Web Designers”) and adjust the font size and color. For high-resolution images, a font size of 48 is recommended.
  5. Set the watermark’s position (e.g., bottom right corner) and adjust the opacity to around 80%.
  6. Click “OK” and then “Apply” to start the batch processing. A progress bar will indicate how many images have been processed.

Once completed, you will receive a message confirming that all files have been processed without errors. You can now check the output folder to see the images with the watermark applied.

In addition to adding watermarks, you may want to resize images for web use. Here’s how:

  1. Open BIMP again and add the same images as before.
  2. Create a new output folder named “Resize.”
  3. Click on the “Add” button and select the “Resize” option.
  4. Set the width and height to 25% of the original size to reduce the file size significantly. Ensure that the option to preserve the aspect ratio is checked.
  5. Click “OK” and then “Apply” to process the images.

After processing, you can check the new folder to see the resized images. For example, if the original images were 5.17 MB each, the resized versions should be around 622 KB, making them much more manageable for web use.

Batch processing images using the BIMP plugin in GIMP 2.10 is a straightforward way to enhance your workflow. Whether you are adding watermarks or resizing images for social media, BIMP provides a powerful solution for handling multiple images efficiently.

Feel free to experiment with different settings and actions within BIMP to find what works best for your projects. For more tutorials and tips, check out the DCP Web YouTube channel, where you can find over 750 free video tutorials on various software applications. Happy graphic design editing!
