In this tutorial, we will explore how to create stunning double exposure images using GIMP 2.10. This technique combines two images to create a unique and artistic effect. We will go through the steps required to achieve this look, including using layer masks and adjusting colours. Let’s get started!
First, ensure you have GIMP 2.10 installed on your computer. For this tutorial, we will be using three images, which you can find linked in the YouTube description. Begin by dragging and dropping the image of a woman into GIMP.
Adding an Alpha Channel
- Right-click on the image layer and select Add Alpha Channel. This step is crucial as it allows for transparency in the image.
- Next, right-click on the layer again and select Duplicate Layer. Repeat this step to create a total of three copies of the layer.
- Hide the bottom two layers by clicking the eye icon next to them in the layers panel.
To create the double exposure effect, we need to manipulate the image:
-
Go to Colors and select Invert. This will give you a negative version of the image.
-
Again, go to Colors and select Levels. Adjust the levels by dragging the left slider to the right until most of the woman’s image appears white. Be careful not to lose too much detail.
-
Click OK to apply the changes.
-
Select the Paintbrush Tool from the toolbox.
-
Ensure that white is selected as the foreground colour. If it is not, click on the colour swatch and drag the cursor to the top left corner to select white.
-
Increase the brush size and start painting over the areas of the image you want to keep. Focus on the main parts first, then refine the edges with a smaller brush size.
-
Remember to let go of the left mouse button periodically to save your progress. This way, if you make a mistake, you can easily undo the last action without losing all your work.
Once you have painted the areas you want to keep:
- Go back to Colors and select Levels again. This time, drag the left slider to make the background black while maintaining some detail in the image.
- Click OK and use the Paintbrush Tool to clean up any artifacts or unwanted areas.
- Switch the brush colour to black and paint over the sections you want to remove, ensuring a clean finish.
Now that we have our base image ready, we will create layer masks:
- Duplicate the layer with the woman again to have multiple copies for different effects.
- Hide the bottom two layers and keep one visible.
- Right-click on the visible layer and select Add Layer Mask. Choose Black (full transparency) and click Add.
- Press Control + V to paste the copied image into the mask. This will allow you to see the background through the mask.
To enhance the double exposure effect:
- Drag a background image (like trees or clouds) into GIMP and place it below the layer of the woman.
- Select the top layer of the woman and go to Select > All, then Edit > Copy.
- Hide the current layer and select the background layer. Right-click and add another layer mask, again choosing Black (full transparency).
- Paste the copied image into this mask and anchor it down.
Now that you have your double exposure image:
- You can experiment with different blending modes by selecting the top layer and changing the mode to Screen, Dodge, or others to see how they affect the image.
- Adjust the opacity of the layers to achieve the desired look.
- You can also add more images and repeat the masking process to create complex compositions.
In this tutorial, we learned how to create double exposure images using GIMP 2.10. We covered essential techniques such as adding alpha channels, using layer masks, and adjusting colours.
This artistic effect allows for endless creativity, so feel free to experiment with different images and styles. Remember to save your work frequently and have fun with the process!
