In this tutorial, we will explore how to create an image from text using GIMP, a powerful open-source image editing software. Whether you are a beginner or looking to enhance your skills, this guide will walk you through each step of the process.
Before we dive into the tutorial, ensure you have GIMP installed on your computer. If you haven’t installed it yet, check the YouTube description for a link to the installation guide. Once installed, open GIMP and follow along.
-
Open GIMP and navigate to the folder where your image is stored.
-
Drag and drop the image into GIMP.
-
Select the Crop Tool from the toolbox.
-
Click and drag over the image to select the area you want to keep. Make sure to leave some space around the edges for a clean look.
-
Once satisfied with your selection, click inside the selected area to crop the image.
-
Select the Brush Tool from the toolbox.
-
Change the brush colour to white by clicking the colour box at the top and selecting white.
-
Adjust the brush size to around 200.
-
Carefully paint over the background, avoiding the face and hair. You can zoom in using the middle mouse button and the control key with the mouse wheel for precision.
-
Right-click on the image layer in the layers panel and select Duplicate Layer.
-
Ensure you are working on the top layer.
-
With the top layer selected, go to Colours and then Curves.
-
Create an S-shape curve by dragging points on the curve to enhance the image’s saturation.
-
Click OK to apply the changes.
-
Click on the bottom layer and select Add New Layer.
-
Ensure the new layer has a white background and click OK.
-
Move this new layer above the previous one.
-
Select the Text Tool and click and drag to create a text box that fills the screen.
-
Go to Google and search for “lorem ipsum” to find dummy text. Copy the text you want to use.
-
Return to GIMP and paste the text using Control + V.
-
Select all the text with Control + A and change the text colour to black.
-
Adjust the font size to around 20.
-
Copy and paste the text repeatedly until it fills the entire text box.
-
Right-click on the text layer and select Merge Down to combine it into a single layer.
-
Move this layer to sit between the two image layers.
-
Select the top image layer and change its mode to Screen. This will allow the text to show through the image.
-
Create another new layer with a white background.
-
Select the Gradient Tool and choose a gradient you like.
-
Click and drag to apply the gradient to the new layer.
-
Set this layer’s mode to Screen as well to see the gradient colours fill the text.
-
Select the top image layer and adjust its opacity to around 30% to blend the image and text effectively.
-
Go to File and select Save As to save your project. Name it something like “image-01.xcf” to keep the GIMP project file.
-
To export the final image, go to File > Export As, choose JPEG format, and set the quality to 90.
Feel free to experiment with different images, text, and gradients. You can use any text you like, such as quotes, poems, or even content from your website. The possibilities are endless!
By following these steps, you can create stunning images that combine text and visuals. This technique is perfect for social media posts, personal projects, or any creative endeavour. Enjoy experimenting with GIMP, and I look forward to seeing your creations in the next graphic design tutorial!
