Comic Book Effect GIMP 2.10

Want to turn an ordinary photo into a striking comic book or graphic novel style illustration – without spending hours editing by hand? In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to achieve a professional comic book effect in GIMP using the free G’MIC plugin. It only takes a few clicks and a bit of patience while GIMP processes the filters, and the results look like something straight off a comic book cover.

What You'll Need

Before you get started, make sure you have the following set up:

Once you have GIMP and G’MIC installed, you’re ready to create the effect.

Step 1: Open Your Image in GIMP

Start by opening GIMP and simply dragging and dropping your chosen image into the workspace. Using a high-resolution photo will give you more detail to work with once the effect is applied – busy scenes with people or lots of texture tend to look especially striking.

Step 2: Access the G'MIC Plugin

Once your image is loaded:

  1. Go to Filters
  2. Select G’MIC-Qt
  3. Navigate to the Artistic category

Inside the Artistic section, you’ll find a huge range of style filters to experiment with. For this tutorial, we’re using Graphic Novel, which is specifically designed to create that comic book/painted illustration look.

Step 3: Preview and Adjust the Effect

As soon as you click on Graphic Novel, GIMP will zoom into your image and generate a live preview so you can see the effect taking shape in real time.

From here, start adjusting the sliders to fine-tune the look:

  • Pencil size and amplitude – Increasing these gives the image a softer, more painterly texture.
  • Sharpness – Bump this up to create the effect of visible “paint dabs” across the image.
  • Edge and smoothness – Increasing these settings adds more definition, helping the image resemble hand-painted comic book artwork.

Move the sliders gradually and let the preview refresh – you’ll notice the image transforming from a photo into something that looks more like a painting or comic panel with each adjustment.

Step 4: Choose Your Color Mix Style

G’MIC includes several “mix” style options that change how colors and edges are rendered, including:

  • Vivid Edge (recommended – gives bold, punchy comic-style coloring)
  • Dark Edge
  • Graphic Color

There are dozens of combinations to explore here – this is genuinely one of the most flexible parts of the plugin, so don’t be afraid to experiment until you find a look you like.

Step 5: Apply the Effect

Once you’re happy with your settings, click Apply.

A quick heads-up: this step takes some patience. G’MIC runs your image through multiple layered filters, so processing typically takes 30-40+ seconds depending on your image size and computer speed. Just let it run – it’s doing a lot of heavy lifting behind the scenes.

When it’s finished, click OK to confirm the changes.

Step 6: Review the Result

Zoom in on your newly transformed image (hold Ctrl and scroll to zoom in GIMP) to inspect the detail. You should notice the photo now has a distinct illustrated, comic-panel quality – the kind of look you’d expect on the front cover of a graphic novel.

Step 7: Export Your Image

To save your comic book-style image without overwriting the original:

  1. Go to File > Export As
  2. Rename the file (e.g., add “-1” to the end) so your original photo is preserved
  3. Choose your export directory
  4. Export as a JPG at around 90% compression

That’s it – you now have both your original photo and your new comic book version saved side by side for comparison.

Final Thoughts

The G’MIC plugin is a genuinely powerful (and completely free) tool for GIMP users. The Artistic category alone contains dozens of filters beyond Graphic Novel, and there are entire additional categories still to explore. What would take months to recreate manually with layers and hand-painting can be achieved in under a minute using this plugin.
