Colour Grading in Premiere Pro

This blog post provides a comprehensive beginner’s guide to colour grading in Adobe Premiere Pro. It covers the basic steps for enhancing video colours, including adjusting temperature, exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, whites, blacks, and saturation.

The tutorial emphasises the importance of personal preference in colour grading and encourages users to experiment for the best results.

Color grading is an essential skill for video editors, allowing them to enhance the visual appeal of their footage. In this tutorial, we will explore the basics of colour grading in Adobe Premiere Pro. Whether you are a beginner or looking to refine your skills, this guide will help you understand the fundamental techniques to make your videos pop.

To begin, open Adobe Premiere Pro and create a new project. For this tutorial, we will use a video clip downloaded from the Pixels website. You can find a link to the same video clip in the YouTube description of the original tutorial. Once you have your clip, drag and drop it into your project timeline.

As we start working on our video clip, it’s important to remember that colour grading is subjective. There is no right or wrong way to colour grade; it ultimately depends on your vision for the video. In this case, we will focus on enhancing the colours of a drone footage featuring sea lions against a bright blue sky.

Accessing Colour Correction Tools

  1. Navigate to the Lumetri Colour panel.
  2. Click on the drop-down menu and select Basic Corrections.

This section provides several options to adjust the colour settings of your video.

Adjusting Temperature

The first adjustment we will make is to the temperature. This setting allows you to shift the colour balance towards warmer or cooler tones. For our clip, we want to enhance the blue in the sky, so we will move the temperature slider towards the cooler side.

Checking Your Adjustments

To see the impact of your adjustments, you can toggle the colour correction on and off. This will allow you to compare the original clip with your corrected version. You should notice a more vibrant blue in the sky after adjusting the temperature.

Modifying Exposure

Next, we will look at exposure. If your footage appears too dark, increasing the exposure can help brighten the image. In our case, we will make a slight adjustment to enhance the overall brightness without overexposing the highlights.

Enhancing Contrast

Adding contrast is crucial for making your video stand out. Increasing the contrast will help define the difference between light and dark areas, making the image pop. Adjust the contrast slider until you achieve a pleasing balance.

Working with Highlights and Shadows

  • Highlights: These are the brightest parts of your image. You can choose to increase or decrease them based on your preference. In this tutorial, we will leave the highlights at their current setting.
  • Shadows: Adjusting the shadows can help bring out details in darker areas. In our footage, the shadows look good, so we will not make significant changes here.

Adjusting Whites and Blacks

  • Whites: Slightly increasing the whites can enhance the brightness of the lighter areas in your video.
  • Blacks: Decreasing the blacks will add depth to your footage, especially in scenes with darker elements like mountains. Adjust these sliders to find the right balance for your clip.

Increasing Saturation

Finally, we will adjust the saturation. Increasing saturation will enhance the overall colour intensity in your video. As you increase the saturation, observe how the colours in the ground and sky become more vibrant.

After making these adjustments, toggle the colour correction on and off to see the difference. The original clip may appear washed out compared to your corrected version. Remember, colour grading is not a quick task; it often requires time and experimentation to achieve the desired look.

In this tutorial, we covered the basics of colour grading in Adobe Premiere Pro. We explored how to adjust temperature, exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, whites, blacks, and saturation to enhance the visual quality of our video. Remember that colour grading is a personal process, and the best results come from experimenting with different settings.

For more advanced techniques, stay tuned for future tutorials. Thank you for following along, and I look forward to seeing you in the next tutorial!
