Change Background Colour in GIMP

This tutorial provides a step-by-step guide on changing the background colour of an image using GIMP.

In this tutorial, we will explore how to change the background colour of an image using GIMP 2.10. This process is straightforward and can be applied to various images, especially those with a simple, flat background. Let’s dive into the steps.

Getting Started with GIMP

  1. Open GIMP: Launch the GIMP software on your computer.
  2. Create a New File: Go to File > New. Set the resolution to 1920 by 1080 pixels and ensure it is in landscape mode. Click on the Advanced Options and set the DPI to 72, filling it with transparency. Click OK to create a blank canvas.
  3. Import Your Image: Navigate to the folder where your image is stored. Drag and drop the image into GIMP.

Resizing the Image

  1. Zoom Out: Click on the image and hold down the Ctrl key while using the mouse wheel to zoom out. You can also pan the canvas using the middle mouse button.
  2. Scale the Image: Select the Scale Tool (or press Shift + S). Click on the image, hold down the Alt key, and use the mouse wheel to adjust the opacity to around 70%. This allows you to see the canvas size while resizing.
  3. Adjust the Size: Click and drag the handles to resize the image appropriately. Once satisfied, set the opacity back to 100% and click Scale.

Cropping the Image

  1. Crop Tool: Select the Crop Tool from the toolbox. Ensure that the option to expand from the centre is turned off.
  2. Select Area to Crop: Click and drag around the image, leaving a decent gap around the edges. Press Enter to crop the image to the desired size.

Removing the Original Background

  1. Magic Wand Tool: Select the Magic Wand Tool and set the feather radius to 5 pixels and the threshold to around 12.
  2. Select the Background: Click on the pink background of the image. Go to Edit > Cut to remove most of the background.
  3. Check for Outlines: Deselect the selection by going to Select > None. If there are faint outlines, you can either crop again or use the Eraser Tool to remove them manually.

Adding a New Background Colour

  1. Paint Bucket Tool: Select the Paint Bucket Tool and choose a new background colour. For example, select a blue colour and ensure the opacity is set to 100%. Click on the background layer to fill it with the new colour.
  2. Remove Remaining Outlines: If any pink outlines remain, use the Eraser Tool to carefully erase them.

Experimenting with Background Effects

  1. Duplicate Layers: To create variations, duplicate the background layer. You can do this by right-clicking on the layer and selecting Duplicate Layer.
  2. Gradient Background: Select the Gradient Tool and choose a gradient style. Hold down the Ctrl key while dragging to create a straight gradient line. Experiment with different colours and styles.
  3. Adding Blur Effects: Duplicate the image layer again and apply a Gaussian Blur from the Filters menu. Adjust the blur settings to create a soft glow effect around the image.

Finalizing Your Image

  1. Save Your Work: Go to File > Save As to save your project in GIMP format, preserving all layers.
  2. Export the Image: To export your final image, go to File > Export As. Choose JPEG format and adjust the compression settings as needed.
  3. Experiment Further: Feel free to play around with different effects, colours, and gradients to enhance your image further.

Conclusion

In this tutorial, we have covered how to change the background colour of an image using GIMP 2.10. By following these steps, you can effectively remove unwanted backgrounds and replace them with new colours or gradients.

Experiment with different techniques to enhance your graphic design skills. Happy editing!
